IPTM Welcomes John Hinton

John Hinton, IPTM Training CoordinatorCrime Scene Forensics & Criminal Investigation Training Coordinator

IPTM is pleased to welcome John Hinton as the new training coordinator of our Criminal Investigation and Crime Scene Forensics programs. He will be responsible for classroom instruction, recruiting instructors, scheduling, and supporting the current subject matter experts. He will also be charged with developing new classroom and online courses in our ongoing effort to meet the generational needs of today's law enforcement professionals. He currently teaches IPTM's 40-hour Homicide Investigation and 24-hour Criminal Investigative Techniques courses.

John is a longtime IPTM instructor with more than 40 years of law enforcement experience. In 2022, he retired at the rank of sergeant from the Jacksonville (FL) Sheriff's Office where he served as the supervisor of Patrol, Street Level Narcotics, Violent Crimes Task Force, and Burglary.

Biography

John began his career in law enforcement in 1979 as a conservation law enforcement officer for a park district in the State of Illinois. He left the agency to assume a position as a patrol officer in a small municipal department. While there, John was a training officer, evidence technician and was later promoted to sergeant. John left the agency to join a larger university police department where he fulfilled duties as a training officer and member of the Tactical Response Unit. During the 11 years John was with Illinois agencies, he was a primary instructor for the Police Training Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He took that opportunity to obtain an AAS in Respiratory Therapy and a BA in Criminal Justice.

In 1990, John moved to Florida and joined the staff of IPTM as a training specialist assigned to Drug Investigations programs. During the next nine years, he taught and helped develop many training programs in Drug Investigations, FTO, Management and Supervision. In 1993, John was certified as a law enforcement officer by CJSTC in the State of Florida. John maintained his certification by working as a reserve officer with the Florida Marine Patrol which transitioned into the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission.

In 1999, he accepted a position with the Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ), Criminal Justice Training Center to teach and coordinate the Basic Law Enforcement and Correctional Officer Curricula. After two years, he was recruited to join the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office as a training specialist assigned to the Training Center. In 2003, John returned to full-time law enforcement duties, assigned to the Patrol Division on the midnight shift. After two years, he was assigned to a specialized enforcement unit working high crime apartment complexes. In 2006, John was transferred to the Detective Division where he worked as a detective in the Auto Theft Unit and the Aggravated Battery Unit. In 2007, he moved to the Homicide Unit.

John transferred to the Robbery Unit in 2012 and was promoted to Sergeant in 2016. As a sergeant, he worked as a supervisor in Patrol, Street Level Narcotics, Violent Crimes Task Force, and Burglary before his retirement in 2022.
