Two New Courses for Detention and Corrections

The Institute of Police Technology and Management (IPTM) is expanding its training portfolio with two new courses designed specifically for detention and corrections professionals. These programs mark IPTM's return to corrections-focused training and address some of the most pressing challenges facing today's facilities.

Drug Identification and Contraband Detection for Corrections Officers

This two-day course provides practical training in identifying illicit drugs, recognizing signs of impairment and overdose, detecting contraband, and conducting effective searches and investigations. Students will gain hands-on skills to help enhance facility safety and security.

Negotiation Strategies for Detention and Corrections

This five-day course prepares corrections and law enforcement professionals to manage inmate-driven crises, hostage situations, and other critical incidents. Students will develop negotiation, communication, and intelligence-gathering skills while learning strategies for resolving high-risk situations safely and effectively.

"Critical incidents within correctional settings present challenges that differ significantly from those encountered in traditional law enforcement environments," said IPTM. "This course was developed to provide negotiators and response personnel with strategies tailored to the realities of secure facilities and inmate populations."

As correctional facilities face increasingly complex security challenges, IPTM remains committed to providing relevant, practical training that helps criminal justice professionals protect staff, inmates, and their communities. Both courses will be held at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida, and registration is now open.
